do you have reservations about gettin' yer ham ticket? I don't blame you! There's a lot to learn, and a lot of hams seem like they really don't want to teach you. Some old timers I bitter about loosing the morse code requirement for hf operation. You may think you have to be a Genius to pass the test. Getting your first ticket is hard, when you get it, you should feel proud to get it. I've been a ham for over ten years now, and in that time I've helped save lives with my hobby, given myself countless hours of joy building radios, and met people over the air from all over the place. I've written a blog entry at My personal blog. If you have a good story to share about how you have served with ham radio, or have been served, please comment!

I just got mine, and am sitting for the General Exam in about a week. I think I'll stop there. The "Extra" looks way too tough!Originally posted by Klayton View PostI never did HAM because I was told the test requirements are off the chart difficult to learn...
So I just got lazy and did cell phones, LOL. (yes I know cell phones are junk in PAW-but hey, thats what I got)
I think Ham radios (and those who know how to use them) will become invaluable in times of crisis.

Did old school 5 wpm Novice in 89, then old school Technician in 91. Never went further because of the 13 wpm code. Finally in 02 upgraded to General.www.homesteadingandsurvival.com

Klayton, I studied for mine here. http://www.qrz.com/testing.html You can take multiple tests and they use many of the same question that I saw on my exam that I took. Questions that I didn't understand, I researched on the web. There are many sites that you can find the info to help. For a little time and a small amount of money, you can have a ticket.Originally posted by Klayton View PostI never did HAM because I was told the test requirements are off the chart difficult to learn...

I have zero engineering or electronics background. I studied for 2 weeks and missed only 1 question on the test. Not as hard as you may believe so don't be scared. It's true that some HAM operators do not want to teach you, I don't understand why they ***** about newbies on the air if they are not going to help the newbie out.

Congratulations, and welcome to the fraternity! One of the greatest things about ham radio to me is that practicality trumps theory all the time. I think that's why some people get their drawers in a bunch. The guys who know a lot can help a lot too though, the trick is to find a group who will help you learn what you want to learn and are patient enough to put up with your new ness.Originally posted by Raf32 View PostI have zero engineering or electronics background. The online testing sites are great for prepping for a test. When I got my first ticket in 2000 I had been studying code, and test materials through the advanced class. When i actually took the test I discovered they were changing the rules, so I did take the 5 wpm test, and got my tech + ticket. A year later I barely passed my general because I relied on what I knew from before without studying. I used one of the online test sites to help me prep for the extra exam, and got it right with only 2 questions missed when I took the test.---------------

I've always had an issue with having to qualify for an amature radio license with a test. Something about the government owning the airwaves just never sat right with me.
I know I know, you have to take a test to get a drivers license but you could kill someone driving.
I've talked skip all over this country and to several other countries as well, I even have the QSL cards to prove it but it was all illegal according to the government.
