Thanks for the link to the free topos, Matt. I guess, if you have to, use alternative routes but reading these scenarios makes me more of a believer to already be living in your bol and not put your family in danger of facing other people on the road that are scared, crazy, dangerous or all of the above. We're not in the exact location or situation we wanted to be in but we're in a better location than most and will make our location work.Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.

There are too many variables to believe you can live in one place and never leave. Weather is one that we face, nuclear dangers, railroad spills, wildfires, etc etc not to mention manmade stuff. The mere fact that you might be somewhere else when IT happens may dictate that you make it back to the BOL. Very few live and work at the BOL and never leave and live life. I could be at a kids football game across the state, visitng relatives or away on business. Plan routes, fuel and hazards carefully even on small trips say maybe a weekend training session that one needed to drive back in and something happened even a tornado. I rememeber trying to get back in from National Guard training once and encountering 6 tornados during an outbreak. Wasnt sure i could make it but knew from radio traffic there was no going back where I came from because it was leveled. Somethig else a good set of maps helps withis IDing potential choke points or bottlenecks to travel. Could be a bridge, or a natural feature that limits movement either on or off a main road. Also when you consider longer travel times due to traffic congestion, think about increase fuel use for stop and go traffic.Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

I should have clarified myself. We will make our location work unless, and until, it becomes impossible (for what ever reason) to stay there. At this point we only have one alternative location to retreat to (45 minutes of normal travel) and I'm very familiar with the back roads between here and there but I'm still going to take advantage of the topo map link you shared.
