  • Grass Fires

News from world, national, and local news sources, organized to give you in-depth news coverage of sports, entertainment, business, politics, weather, and more.

Yesterday we had a lot of grass fires in our state. The dry conditions, low humidity and high winds really tore us up. It however gave me some time to review our place and renew my book of instructions. The book I have put together is to help my family work thru the OODA loop as they do not deal with emergencies on a daily baisis like I do. The book is for longer warnings and of course as stated in the headline "get out" if time is too short. The fires were some distance away yesterday but they traveled very fast(40-50mph sometimes). I included an example of what the sheets look like in my book. I "borrowed" several good ideas from others in putting mine together.

I called the family and discussed their places and grass height etc with them too. About 6 years ago my family and friends had to fight a grass fire and water down our roof and lawn etc. It was in the middle of the night and started at a trailor house just south of me. It had been real dry and I had prepositioned sprinklers and hoses already due to the # of fires already. I had also taped over the vents in the eves and covered the air spinner on top of the house as most fires start in the attic from embers as I had learned from a fire marshall in a class I took. My preps saved our place.

We won the fight but it wasnt pretty, I started in my underwear and combat boots. My friend brought me out pants when he showed up. Good thing too cause the fireman arrived shortly afterwards and would have been useless throwing up on the lawn:) LOL

Please take this as a chance to review your preps on this till we get some good rains.

This is actually where I praise banks (or credit unions for that matter).

I implore all of you, if you haven't done so already, to have official copies made of your property deed(s), birth certificate, social security card, and marriage license, and possibly titles (automotive). Then take these official copies, place them HEAVY flame retardant bag, and deposit them in a safety deposit box in a bank. I would prefer you to do this twice, once in a local bank, and one in a bank in another city. I have copies here in my gun safe, and in my local bank, and a final copy in my mother's safe which in a completely separate state.

The refrigerator is also a good place to store documents like this as the contents usually survive "most" fires too. Good points Klayton!

The problem with fridges is they aren't flame resistant , just drop the cash on a good fire safe and keep a few copies elsewhere . I deal with this line of work and see on a daily basis people who don't have any Id of any sort and no cash and worst of all no insurance . I have to once a week give someone cash , because they can't cash a check because of no ID . It is also a good thing to keep a credit card or some cash in there . I prefer the keeping of my docs with family and not banks , bank have hours , family doesn't . Once again a fire safe isn't expensive , make it a gift with the knowledge that you will keep a few items there and offer to keep a few items for them as well .

They are back!!!!!!!! Texas and Oklahoma are gettin whooped. We are on day 2, we lost alot of houses, barns, cars and a church. The winds and the 60 something days of 100+ have taken their tolls. The trees are going up in seconds, the tops have no moisture and have gone into a hibernation due to the extreme heat. Evacuations are rapid and injuries are stacking up. We are supposed to get rain and cooler temps Sunday morning, pray for it.
