  • BO Location Question

i have two places that my family can bug out to.

    1) is a beach house on an island with only one two lane bridge on to the island, only way to leave or enter is by that bridge or a ferry.

    2) is about 55 arces of family land that only gets used for special events. it has a mobile home on it with two small fresh water ponds. it has city water,(no well), but is fairly remote outside a town of about 8,000 people. nearest big town is thirty min drive.

my father and i have debated which is the better place. i say that the land is better. decent source of fresh water and more area to grow and raise food.

he says beach house is better for security and fishing and water supply. i think while it will keep people out it can also keep you there. i dont know what do ya'll think

Well its like my Software Engineering Instructor used to say "It Depends". How much tillable land is avail on the island? How many people currently on the island? and a thousand other things to consider.

I have similar properties to what you have described and several smaller pieces.

In my opinion the 55 acres is better depending on specifics. It also depends on if it is a total breakdown TEOTWAWKI scenario.

I have ocean front island property. The fact is, people on the other side of the bridge will find a way to get to the island. That makes you a sitting duck. Yes, I am right across the street from the ocean and can fish but that is really limited. I estimate the ratio of people that can get across the inter coastal, and attack me, at over 1000 to one. Also the residence I have cannot be defended easily. There are neighbors on all sides. The house is typical CBS construction which means rifle rounds can easily penetrate. The whole north part of the house is composed of multiple french doors, including the master bedroom. Building codes and association rules will not allow changes. Associations get on your butt if you change paint color. It's a defensive nightmare.

Also I am surrounded by salt water - that takes energy to desalinate - almost impossible for crops. The ocean home is an investment that I might liquidate. I live 1 1/2 hours away from it. It was part of my retirement package. But it is worthless for a survival retreat in my opinion. I spend weekends and major parts of the winter there. Currently I live in Wellington, FL.

Now I also have several large tracks of land in a Western state and a Southern state that are away from large cities and wooded. The neighbors are much more aware and ready to defend their land. There is fresh water supply, trees, game, fish, and I can grow crops and have animals for milk and eggs. Also I do not have to comply with building codes that preclude me from creating a dwelling that I can defend.

If you think things are going to get really bad, the 55 acres are the way to go. If things do not fall into utter discord or the end of the world, then enjoy the island property. I use the island property for entertaining and just getting away. It was good for its time, but the thrill is gone. If I could get a good price I would dump it.

I have some smaller properties with some hidden caches of supplies, food, etc. These smaller pieces are good stop overs for getting to my retreats.

I am also buying some property in NC - TN area - as a stop off to the Western land. If things get bad, I will be migrating out West. The West is the Best.

If you want to survive you must read the signs of the times. And those signs ain't a lookin too good.

Well, if it was only a local disaster... like the eastern city board. We could bug out to a place my brother and his wife own in West Virginia. I know it's far from the clearing but in the event of something small it could work.

If it was huge then I guess I would go to Michigan, up near Battle Creek. It would be good because it's close to the Canadian border. I would despise going into that French speaking land but oh well.

Have you lived there any at all?
Now, I know that most opinion's are subject to knowledge and or experience and they change due to the angle of the person but..

There is no doubt some pretty land there, and a lot of places that could sustain you like farming, animals, and the like. I have family from northern CA, several city's in Oregon all the way up to Olympia and I can tell you the last place I would want to live is on the west coast. I have traveled that area quite a few times and that is the last place I would want to be.
Why? Because of the people. Some of the most liberal, condescending, and arrogant folks I have met are in those states. If there ever was a place to worry about the 'golden horde' it would be from the West coast.
I hope you have a real good place, and have thought this decision out thoroughly.

If you're talking about California then yes, but the midwest is ok.

I was responding to Patriot Preppers comment about going out west. I guess he didn't say West coast, just 'Western State' so I might have assumed what he meant.
Yeah, I was talking about california...you know why they refer to it as the cereal state?

I no longer consider California a state. California is the last place I would live in. I was refering to North Western states, of which I do have property and have lived there. I have been prepping for over 30 years and know a little about what I am talking about.

Man, I am not a communist, why would you think I was referring to Cali. (I used to love California until they destroyed it with communistic extreme liberal politics and the open attitude towards illegal immigration. It's a crime what they did to that beautiful state.)

Without mentioning the specific location, my property is West and North, but it is not on the coast. Maybe you can guess. OK, have you heard of Montana?

I realize there is no perfect location. But the question posted was in reference to island property and her 55 acres. I have some island property and the other properties I mentioned. Between the two, I would choose to bug out to the Montana property over the island. (see my original post for details as to why.)

We do what we have to do under the circumstances.

I had come to the conclusion you weren't talking about the West coast in the post above this one (#8) when I mentioned me assuming you meant Cali.
I agree, they did ruin that beautiful state with anything-goes-policies.
Montana would be a great place to "hunker down", it's got the right land and the right mind-set. I have only drove through there and that was back in the mid-80's.

                      Take care.

                            Desalination takes alot of energy...

Well that depends, are you trying to provide water for a farm? or simply survival?

We built solar desalination stills when we were in the boy scouts. One small still was enough to make roughly a quart of fresh water a day. No great measure I know, but its 1 quart of fresh water you didnt have without it. =)

Side bonus, when it evaporates your sea water reservoir, you get to smash up the salt in the reservoir for your own fresh "sea salt". =)
