  • Arkansas Earthquake! Biggest yet!

Have you ever wondered why you prep? I discovered a new reason why I prep last night.

We had a 4.7 quake at 11:02pm, aftershock (3.8) at 11:20pm, and 2 more aftershocks in the wee hours of the morning, that I slept through. USGS says the biggest in over 40 years, felt in 4 states

When you're prepped, you don't panic, have a heart attack, stroke, or just plain "freak out" when crazy, mind-bending things start happening, like your bed trying to throw you out on the floor! You have a clarity of thought, a calmness, a serenity of knowing that you've done all you can do to prepare for the safety of your family and yourself. That's the new reason for prepping I discovered last night.

If you have prepped, you will not only have provided water, food, shelter, protection for your family, but you're also mentally & emotionally prepared to make the right decisions at the right time with clarity of thought to execute the plans that's already in place! Nothing of that panicky, "What do I do now," stuff!

Prep now, and when something happens you can just lay back and watch the show! LOL Small, short-term events can be downright entertaining! (Lord, if you're listening, please, none of that New Madrid Fault stuff like in 1811 & 1812, just little ones, OK?)

Adam Curry is predicting they'll be a massive quake along the New Madrid fault in May, to be caused by HAARP. Its also the reason why birds have been dying along the fault, according to him.

Honestly, I don't know what to think about HAARP and such... I guess it is out of my control, so not on the worry list, but I did notice that they had many whales beach themselves in New Zealand a few days before the quake...

Whose Adam Curry? Sounds like another one of those "experts" that I've learned they're wrong more than they're right, at least I hope so! LOL This quake came from a newly discovered fault by Guy, AR, SW of me, not the New Madrid NE of me. Something like 200 miles between the 2 faults.

I've felt 4 now from Guy, but never a one from New Madrid? "This world just gets curiouser & curiouser!" LOL

Now I don't want anyone to know how un-informed I am, but I don't have a clue what "HAARP" is? But, whatever it is, I agree with you about it. I can't do anything about it, so I don't worry about it. I just prep, keep my head down and my mouth shut! LOL

LMAO Matt! I had a buddy that collected junk. He told me one time he had about 4 acres shedded to protect his junk. A tornado hit him and he said it did about $20K worth of improvements to his land! LOL One of his neighbors told him that he had always been worried that they would get hit and all of his junk would end up on his property. But he lucked out, they don't know where the junk went! LOL

Another benefit of this quake last night, BTW that was felt all the way to OKC, is that now I can spend even more money on preps without DW rolling her eyes at me. She was scared plenty! LOL

Oh, you're bad! I am sitting here laughing out loud over that one. I keep thinking that if New Madrid keeps having the little ones, it will bleed off the pressure and we won't get the big one. Who knows, though. Now someone is saying that it's not New Madrid? That's not good. I'm no where near an expert on plate tectonics, but it would seems that if you move one, the others have to move to accommodate the different pressures. I spent a year and a half on Okinawa in the Air Force, and earthquakes were no big deal there. I do remember learning a valuable lesson about having a bookshelf directly over the head of my bed, though....

As for Adam Curry he is either an highly UNEDUCATED radio and pod cast host, or an obscure guy who make strange claims. Take your pick.

So, in the area of earthquake prediction one would think that if it were possible the U.S. Geological Service would have said something before now.

Last nights earthquake is bothersome to me even though I live way down south. It appears that there is a lot of activity along that fault. Previous ones have even changed the course of the Mississippi River and created a lake.
December 16, 1811, the Daylight Shock, 1415 UTC (8:15 a.m.); (M ~7.2 - 8.2) epicenter in northeast Arkansas; This shock followed the first earthquake by six hours and was similar in intensity.[8]
January 23, 1812, 1500 UTC (9 a.m.); (M ~7.0 - 8.0[8]) epicenter in the Missouri Bootheel. The meizoseismal area was characterized by general ground warping, ejections, fissuring, severe landslides, and caving of stream banks. Johnston and Schweig attributed this earthquake to a rupture on the New Madrid North Fault. This may have placed strain on the Reelfoot Fault.[9]
February 7, 1812, 0945 UTC (4:45 a.m.); (M ~7.4 - 8.6[8]) epicenter near New Madrid, Missouri. New Madrid was destroyed. At St. Louis, Missouri, many houses were severely damaged, and their chimneys were toppled. This shock was definitively attributed to the Reelfoot Fault by Johnston and Schweig. It was uplift along this reverse fault segment, in this event, that created waterfalls on the Mississippi River, disrupted the Mississippi River at Kentucky Bend, created a wave that propagated upstream and caused the formation of Reelfoot Lake.[9]
Slingshot, maybe you should find a bug out location outside the fault line!

You're right about Curry but I guess we'll know in May. Anyway, if you follow Curry's logic, the US Geological Service has no interest in your knowing....they're with the "elite" who want to "clean out the junk" so to speak. ;) Hence, what I said about HAARP (google it if you don't know what it is folks).

But this is NOT the New Madrid Fault kicking up its heels! The NMF runs roughly North and South. This new fault runs East & West? I've never felt anything from the NMF (about 80 mi. northeast.) The 4.7 here was felt in OKC as a 4.7 also, that's over 200 mi. west of the epicenter at Guy, AR. How did it maintain the same magnitude 200+ miles as the epicenter?

Now I'm not as concerned with New Madrid as I am about this new fault. Whatever, I'll just prep and keep my head down and my mouth shut! Why worry about anything you can't change!

Is this related to the Fracking that the gas companies are doing?

I know its a stupid question, if it were related the powers that be would never say. :(

It's not a stupid question and is being reviewed in my state as well because of the density of the locations of the quakes

I am paying a lot of attention to this because my new job is going to have me traveling throughout my beloved South East and Arkansas is in my new territory. It just proves to my wife that my BOB is a great idea...just need to add more bullets to it. I have thought about this a bunch in the last week leading up to my new job. I hope to go over board with my vamped up BOB but if "if was a 5th"
You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?
