  • This is gonna hurt me more than it will hurt you...

I was thinking about survival and preparedness last night. This may be an interesting topic but has anyone ever given any thought in learning Spanish. I for one find the language annoying, but in the event of a disaster and in this country, it may be something of importance to catch up on. I doubt languages like Chinese or Japanese would be as handy. I would think Arabic could be important.

I have picked up a little of it because of the field i work in (the construction field). But i see your point. I agree Arabic could be of value also, for maybe different reasons though

Yeah, how do you say "throw down your guns and come out with your hands up" in arabic? ;)

With us owing so much to the Chinese that'll probably be the language to learn. I've heard there are so many dialects that it's a tough picking it up.

One time when I was young, I thought learning Chinese would be cool. I think the band Project 86 came out with an album that had some chinese in it so that's what inspired me. Anyways, let's just say that thrilling ride went on for about an hour.

I speak some german, macedonian and some spanish in the fields I have been and are in. I have always been willing to learn when there. As they say when in rome.... I had a card I carried with some Arabic terms on it for awhile but while needing it to keep us alive, but here in America? I aint learning Arabic for here. I will go down long before that happens! They will learn my langauge or cease to need language here. Even after an event this is still my house!
That's just me and yes I'm closed minded

Closed Minded is a term made up by people who can't find themselves. You don't have to be anyone else, just yourself. Just as long as you let people be themselves.

I don't mess with no one as I'm easy going till made not to be. I've been in 16 Countries and shared cultures, living quarters and meals with everyone to include many who didn't like me. My family and I shared residence with the Germans and they cared for her and the kids while I was out on business. I alway left the places better than they were. This is my home, they will learn my language just as I did while in theirs.
Cant find myself LOL thats a good one LOL whew, man I needed that!

I want to make sure my son knows how to say "do you want extra shine on those shoes, Mr?" in Mandarin. As for learning Arabic, don't really see the point.

I meant it the other way around. I hate the term "closed minded" it's tossed around like the word ignorant. It's also used as a negative connotation, which it isn't.

I know when I was in the military I always took the effort to know at least simply phrases in the native language like. hello, yes, no, dont shoot me, and put your hands up

I spent three years in Korea in the military, and I learned how to say, "Give me a beer" and "Where's the bathroom." Sigh. I can pronounce anything, but I don't retain it. Maybe it's the frequency of usage? That would explain the two phrases I did learn....

Good point, I took a semester of Russian in my second year of college. I really enjoyed it to be honest... but I couldn't say one word nor recite their alphabet anymore. If you don't use it then it becomes a figment of the past.
