  • Solar Flare

I got this e-mail from a friend who really pays a lot of attention to this stuff and just thought some folks on here might be interested. It sounds like they could get more intense in the next few years, so even if it isn't the cause of a SHTF scenario, it could potentially make one worse if the timing is right and you have no EMP type preps.

Sun erupts with mightiest solar flare in 4 years

Explosion hurls massive wave of charged particles into space, toward Earth

An ultraviolet image from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory shows Monday's X-class flare erupting from the sun. It was the largest flare since Dec. 6, 2006, NASA said.

The sun unleashed its strongest solar flare in four years Monday night, hurling a massive wave of charged particles from electrified gas into space and toward Earth.
The solar storm sent a flash of radiation that hit Earth in a matter of minutes. Now a huge cloud of charged particles is headed our way. These coronal mass ejections, as they are called, typically take about 24 hours or more to arrive. They can spark spectacular displays of the aurora borealis, or northern lights, at high latitudes and sometimes even into the northern United States.
The mega flare, which registered as a Class X2.2 flare on the scale of solar flares, was the first class X flare to occur in the new solar cycle of activity, which began last year. The sun is now ramping up toward a solar maximum around 2013.
"It has been the largest flare since Dec. 6, 2006, so a long time coming," said Phil Chamberlin, deputy project scientist for NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which observed the flare. "There were some clues that led us to believe the likelihood of moderate to large flares (M class or above) could occur, but we were all surprised when it actually happened to be a large X-class."
Class X flares are the strongest types of solar flares that can erupt from the sun. There are also two weaker categories: Class M flares, which are medium strength but still powerful, and Class C flares, which are the weakest storms from the sun.
Last night's X2.2 flare is the most powerful solar eruption of the sun's current weather cycle, called Solar Cycle 24. According to the website Spaceweather.com, which monitors space weather and skywatching events, the flare was the strongest of the last four years.
"It just means that Solar Cycle 24 is ramping up!" Chamberlin told Space.com. "This is the first of probably many more X-class flares to occur over the next 2 to 4 years as we reach the peak and then descend back down from solar cycle 24 maximum."

The Monday flare came on the heels of another, only slightly less powerful, class M6.6 flare on Sunday, Feb. 13. Both events erupted from the same area on the sun, called active region 1158.
"AR 1158 is in the southern hemisphere, which has been lagging the north in activity but now leads in big flares!" NASA scientists wrote on the Solar Dynamics Observatory website.
    Yesterday's Class X flare erupted at 8:50 p.m. EST.
Such a flare can bathe the Earth in high doses of ultraviolet radiation and X-rays hurl a huge burst of solar wind in our direction. When this burst arrives at Earth, the electrons and protons from the solar wind come into contact with our planet's magnetic field, and stream toward the magnetic poles.
The disturbance can create a geomagnetic storm in Earth's magnetic field.
"Geomagnetic storms are possible when the CME arrives 36 to 48 hours hence," Spaceweather.com reported.

Then I got this: I don't know what to make of all of it but it's interesting.

The X2.2 will hit the back side of the M6.6 before reaching Earth.

What happens is the X2.2 encounters far less resistance while erupting. More energy is expelled into space towards Earth.

The X2.2 will hit the back side of the M6.6 and cause it to compress.

The M6.6 will not speed up much since it is the one pushing through space. So the resistance in front plus the force from the X2.2 will compress the CME into a more dense shockwave.

This results in a harder hitting shockwave. There is one time in history this very same double whammy set up occured. The Carrington Event in 1859 had two CME's interacting. The set up is almost Identical as far as historical records shows. There was a smaller CME ahead of the larger CME that caused the Carrington electrical storm here on Earth.

I believe the Carrington Event was amplified because the second CME compressed with the first one.

It is obvious how a compressed CME will have greater effect on the Earth. It will create a MUCH stronger surge of electricity on the ground.

It hasn't hit us yet. So we really don't know if this is the KillShot or not.

But put it this way, there are strange activities like 747 groundings, VIP movements, ect.

Get ready, this may be it. Like a thief in the night!

Ok, so I put the tin-foil hat back on. and my cool dark Oakleys. And they thought I was crazy, HAH! There are those who have been talking about a solar flairs causing a pole shift as well. Others have been saying that the energy may cause volcanoes to erupt. We will see who is correct.

The CME that hit the earth back on Sept 1859 is estimated to have been an X6 class storm.
It fried telegraph wires, set stations on fire and gave a lot of people that where touching steel at that time a pretty good jolt'
With all of the electronic devices that we depend on today where to get hit with this same strength storm, it would fry them out, it would take down the power grid, not just here, but all across the globe and send the world back 150 years in technology and at current estimates, it would take at least 10 years to get the world back up and running at the point that we are at today
This is not a theory or somebodies what if, it has happened here before, and according to the experts, it will happen again!

Before condemning the real possibility of this happening, maybe you should take a look at this film that was aired on the History channels Universe, and then visit the NASA web site and look up CME info and see just what the experts are saying about it!

So when is this CME supposed to hit the earth?

                It already has.
It started Thursday night and on into Friday, and there was another M6.6 event Friday morning.
Experts say that this is just the beginning, its the sun waking up and going into its high or active part of its cycle.
Scientists believe that this solar cycle will be more active with higher scale events than we have witnessed in recent past cycles, some are saying that we could see even worse CME's than what took place back in 1859.

We'll have to just wait and see!

Heres a site that has most of the NOAA and NASA sun satellite tracking, you can track the suns activity in real time, and the reports from NOAA and NASA are on there as well.
Plus the effects of the solar events on the earths magnetosphere near the bottom of the page.

I do know my satelite TV reception got progressively worse yesterday during the Daytona race, but got better after the sun went down. I was worried at first that my 20+ year old TV was taking a dive, but it was only Dish Network.

Thought this was an interesting article to add to this thread

Get ready for a 'global Katrina': Biggest ever solar storm could cause power cuts which last for MONTHS

The world is overdue a ferocious 'space storm' that could knock out communications satellites, ground aircraft and trigger blackouts - causing hundreds of billions of pounds of damage, scientists say.
Astronomers today warned that mankind is now more vulnerable to a major solar storm than at any time in history - and that the planet should prepare for a global Katrina-style disaster.

A massive eruption of the sun would save waves of radiation and charged particles to Earth, damaging the satellite systems used for synchronising computers, airline navigation and phone networks.
Imminent: The world got a taster of the sun's explosive power last week with the strongest solar eruption in five years (white flash, centre) sent a torrent of charged plasma hurtling towards the world. Scientists believe we are overdue a ferocious solar storm
If the storm is powerful enough it could even crash stock markets and cause power cuts that last weeks or months, experts told the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The chances of a disruption from space are getting stronger because the sun is entering the most active period of its 11 to 12-year natural cycle.

The world got a taster of the sun's explosive power last week when the strongest solar eruption in five years sent a torrent of charged plasma hurtling towards the world at 580 miles per second.

Earth's core is rotating much slower than previously thought... but is still turning faster than the rest of the planet

The storm created spectacular aurorae and disrupted radio communications.

Professor Sir John Beddington, the government's chief scientific adviser, said: 'The issue of space weather has got to be taken seriously. We've had a relatively quiet period of space weather - but we can't expect that quiet period to continue.

'At the same time over that period the potential vulnerability of our systems has increased dramatically, whether it is the smart grid in our electricity systems or the ubiquitous use of GPS in just about everything we use these days.
'The situation has changed. We need to be thinking about the ability both to categorise and explain and give early warning when particular types of space weather are likely to occur.'
Threat: Rio de Janeiro during a blackout in 2009. A solar storm could cause global power cuts for months, scientists have warned
Solar storms are caused by massive explosions on the sun.

The explosions release waves of X-rays and ultraviolet radiation which smash into the Earth within minutes, disrupting radio signals and damaging the electronics of satellites.

They are followed ten to 20 minutes later by a burst of energetic particles which cause even more havoc with satellites - and then 15 to 30 hours later by supercharged plasma which collides with Earth's magnetic field.

The plasma create the aurora - or Northern Lights - and can induce electrical currents in power lines and cables.

Jane Lubchenco, head of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said: 'This is not a matter of if, it is simply a matter of when and how big.
'The last time we had a maximum in the solar cycle, about 10 years ago, the world was a very different place. Cell phones are now ubiquitous; they were certainly around but we didn't rely on them for so many different things.

'Many things that we take for granted today are so much more prone to the process of space weather than was the case in the last solar maximum.'
Communications satellites would be knocked out by a solar storm, causing widespread chaos on Earth and hundreds of billions of pounds of damage
The sun goes through a regular activity cycle about 11 years long on average. The last solar maximum occurred in 2001. Its latest minimum was particularly weak and long lasting.

Space storms are not new. The first major solar flare was recorded by British astronomer Richard Carrington in 1859.

Other solar geomagnetic storms have been observed in recent decades. One huge solar flare in 1972 cut off long-distance telephone communication in the mid-western state of Illinois, Nasa said.
Another similar flare in 1989 'provoked geomagnetic storms that disrupted electric power transmission' and caused blackouts across the Canadian province of Quebec, the U.S. space agency said.
