Been following developments on the earthquakes and "dome" forming in Yellowstone. How would one protect themselves against a supervolcano or do you just give up? Lets say you lived a couple thousand miles away, what would you do to protect yourself from fallout lasting years? They also say there will be a 20 degree F drop in worldwide temperatures, and field filled with ash, hence no food production. Any thoughts?

I looked at the fallout map a while back. Bugout to a secondary is all I could come up with and it would have to be (a) a long ways away or (b) on the opposite side of the trade winds which means west. It's defintely a game changer to include waterways as well as water flow direction in some cases. No water, no light, no air no real way to liveKnowledge is Power, Practiced Knowledge is Strength, Tested Knowledge is Confidence

Even if you're a 1000 miles away, you can't really go anywhere. Planes won't fly, cars won't run. I've been considering relocating to Uruguay or some other SA country should be economic collapse occur (how can it not?), wonder how it would hold up to something like this? But I'm guessing, there'd really be no escape for anyone.

Best one could HOPE for is to be far enough away to equal the conditions a few miles from Mt. St. Helens that rebounded amazingly quick. How far away from Yellowstone that has to be is anyone's guess. Game changers like Yellowstone puts everyone in the situation to where they can only prep, then hunker down and hope for the best. There is just too much guess work, theories, unknowns to work out a clear cut plan of action until it happens, then you know what you have facing you (if you still have a face! lol,) and not just guessing.Last edited by slingshot; 02-16-2011, 06:37 PM.

You prep as best you can. Just like we do for the collaspe. A very few of us might be able to move to what we think is a safe place to hide, but I don't that as being possable for many. Most of us (IMHO) will not survive too long if things really go Mad-Max bad. We do our best, but in the end, no one ever gets out alive.

Move closer. It would be one heck of a show!
Yes, something like this would be a game-changer. Not an Extinction Level Event but life would suck for a good long time. Prep as best you can and outlive the zombies. In God we trust, everyone else bring data.

You also have to worry about the gases if you are too close. If it happens worse case scenario like they are predicting, it will be a world changer. If it happens to a lesser effect (which I am thinking-as scientists always overhype things lately) it will perhaps lower the world population??? Maybe not a bad idea since we are approaching what 7billion now? I know it is a terrible thought, but the planet is going to run out of food sooner or later...

No really concerned about overpopulation....we're currently heading in the opposite direction. Anyway, the first people to be depopulated by this are North Americans, likely in very huge numbers. I figure the prevailing winds are to the East more or less in a straight line, so I just have to convince my wife that Uruguay is a nice place to live. I'm open to other suggestions, especially if its still a warm place after a 20 degree drop. ;)Originally posted by Klayton View PostYou also have to worry about the gases if you are too close. I really dont think any of us could survive comfortably if we live east of this unless we had super deep pockets and already had underground fallout shelters stocked full of the story book provisions. Skill and courage will play a roll in survival of something like this but......the key factor is Luck. Some will have it some wont. I put this on the far end of the spectrum of things that could happen. I would put Dirty Bombs and The New Madrid Quake ahead of it. But....the will to survive is how our species has made it this far...that and our ability to adapt. You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?
