  • Surprise at the gun shop

I stopped in to a gun shop here in town yesterday to see what they had. I haven't been in a while, (been pretty broke, and not buying guns) but the guy has had some deals in the past. Anyway, after talking to him for a bit, I noticed that he had a Hi-Point 9 Compact for $115. Not really needing to spend the money, but still beating myself up for passing up deals in the past, I decided to do it. I go through the paperwork, and he calls it in, and for the first time in my life, I got delayed. Yup. Never happened before. That threw me. I haven't been arrested or anything since the last time I bought a gun, and that one went straight through. In fact, the ONLY thing I've done differently is to sign up on a couple of prepper sites. While I was talking to the owner, he told me that it's happening more and more lately. Has it happened to anybody else here?

The owner called this morning and told me that it went through, and I can pick the gun up any time. I arranged a time, but it's still making me wonder. Again, he thought it might be just some general harassment of people who are buying guns, but I gotta wonder.

I don't think it has anything to do with being on a prepper site. I don't think the government has the manpower to start adding all of us to their lists. At least I hope not.

Chances are the person at the gun shop did not put the right details into the system or the system was busy. I know that when you buy a gun at the gun show, even with concealed carry license, they have to get the instant federal background check or whatever they call it. That can take a few seconds or if they are busy and no one answers the phone you have to keep calling. The gun store person probably could not get through. But I am only guessing.

I already get paranoid enough. I don't want to think that big brother is monitoring all the prepper sites and tracking us down. I get POed thinking about how we as "free" Americans have to worry about our government putting law abiding citizens on lists or attempting to disarm us.

A little concern is a good thing. When it gets to be real paranoia and we start seeing ghosts and "da man" working against us on every turn, then it's time to chill out....

Relax, what it means is that someone with the same name or a similar name has a felony. They then have to run the second check. Guess what some jerk has the same name as me and i have to wait everytime. no biggie

Bearman- I dunno. Sounds like a similar situation I am currently in.

I have a tentative job offer (at a hospital) at the moment, pending of all things, a background check. I can say that I have 2 speeding tickets many years older than I (97 and 02) and that is it for my criminal activity. I also have never used drugs, hold several government ID's and certificates. That being said, this background check that normally lasts a few days has turned into almost 2 weeks.

The reason I was given for the delay was due to several areas still under snow and bad weather, people have been taking 3 and 4 day work weeks. Just a penny for your thoughts, but yes, usually my backgrounds take less than 72 hours tops...

I agree with what Matt said, it's probably some guy with the same name and a felony.

Now for my advice, don't buy any new guns that you have to fill out a 4473 for. Private party sales are the way to go. But that's just paranoid old me talkin. ;)

i dont know if you took the SSN option, but that usually clears any mistaken identity up, some people dont want the gun shop knowing their SSN (understandable I guess)...

but the real concern we should be addressing is your highpoint, BUDDY!?!?! What are you doing? When I worked part time at the gun store in Maryland we referred to hipoints as pretty HEAVY paperweights...

As for $115, that is actually the going price for highpoints, we got them dealer price for $75. I about piss myself laughing when I see them at gun shows selling them for $200+ (once as high as $300).

but I know people who love them and have never had a failure, go figure...

No, his call went through the first time. Like I said, they came back the next day and said I was fine. I used my ssn, because I'm NOT particularly paranoid. I figure, if they want me, I'm in the phone book. As for having someone sitting down making note of everyone who's on a prepper site, I'm sure they have software that will do that. The thing is that nobody here is advocating overthrowing the govt. so I don't see it as a problem. I know that everyone here is trying to follow FEMA guidelines and have a couple of weeks worth of food set aside, and nothing more exciting that that, right? :-)

Klayton, I know there is a LOT of prejudice out there against Hi Points, but unless you have $600+ to drop for a handgun, they're probably your best option. I've owned four so far, (now 5) and every one of them went bang when I pulled the trigger. Yes, they're built like a brick, but if they break, you send them in and they get fixed. For life. Don't have to be the original owner, either. I have had one of the 9mm carbines for a while now, and that thing just keeps banging. I've put several thousand rounds through it, and it's jammed a total of ONCE. A friend dropped the mag in the dirt and didn't get all the crud off before he shoved it back into the gun. He cleared the jam, and it kept going. Hard to argue with that at any price. Also, the first round down range from the thing hit dead center in the bullseye, with factory sights. Right now, I would be willing to bet that the carbine shoots better than I do. :-)

My wife and I NEVER hade that much credit card debt, and for the last five years or so we don't even use or have c cards!

Now comes my concern. I am looking to purchase the new Ruger LC9 sometime in the next few months. I am wondering if this will hinder me.

First sorry bout that, they got my wifes debit card last week too. Second no, civil stuff has no bearing on the background check only felony convictions and in some cases domestics even when a misdomeaner.

Thanks Matt In Ok. It was funny, the guy from the collection agency, (that's how I found out about my ssn being swiped) didn't seem to believe me that I didn't take out that card. That is until he asked if I lived in Holly Wood Florida, my reply was, "I HAVE NEVER EVEN BEEN TO FLORIDA!!!". Needless to say it's being looked into.

Yep mine was bold enough to pay either a fine or a traffic ticket with his in some sinkhole in Texas. Pretty awesome that you can pay a court clerk with a debit card with the wrong name on it, wrong gender, without the #s on the back, pin # or anything. Makes me think the clerk is dirty too because of the lack of cooperation until official intervention. The bank isnt going after them either. They are just gonna write it off and pass the cost on to the customers. Good news is it wasnt a credit card, which I don't have, and we caught it before real damage was done.
