  • Opsec is sometimes nothing more then comman sence

I know it is legal to make a certain amount of alcohol for personal consumption. And 5 years (or less) after Badtimes happen, we might be faced with using alcohol to treat just about everything like in the early 1900's. So it is not that far fetched and idea to be able to produce your own, with in the legal limits (of course).

    Brothers charged with making moonshine

WOODBRIDGE, Va. - Two brothers are charged with making moonshine in our area, and you might not believe how they were caught.

Investigators say the men advertised a moonshine-making still for sale on the Internet.

Agents with the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control came across the ad on Craigslist. An undercover agent arranged to meet the seller in Stafford County. The agent bought the still, and the seller - one of the brothers - was arrested.

At the same time, agents executed a search warrant at the brothers' home in Woodbridge. There they found a second still, a bunch of moonshine, as well as some marijuana and a handgun.

The moonshine the men had apparently been making was 196 proof. That's a whopping 98 percent alcohol by volume.

The charges against Joseph Chraska, 23, and Lee Chraska, 26, include illegal manufacturing of alcohol, which is a felony in Virginia. In addition, Joseph Chraska is charged with manufacturing of alcohol while armed, and marijuana possession. Additional charges against Lee Chraska are possession of untaxed alcohol, and possession of distilling apparatus.

If convicted, Joseph Chraska faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, while his brother faces up to seven years. Both have been released on bond.

So just ordering a still or building one is illegal? Anyone know the law on this?

I have no interest in building one, but I could see the benefit of having one, like Eeyore said a few years after bad times.

I believe that you can make a certain amount of wine and nor beer for personal consumption. But alcohol is different (at least type that is consumable) i think that is zero. But everything is diffferent State to State

I found this on one of the FED sites

S3: I've seen ads for home distilling equipment in catalogs ("turn wine into brandy," "make your own essential oils"). Is it legal to buy and use a still like that?

Under Federal rules administered by TTB, it depends on how you use the still. You may not produce alcohol with these stills unless you qualify as a distilled spirits plant (see earlier question). However, owning a small still and using it for other purposes is allowed. You should also check with your State and local authorities - their rules may differ.

A still is defined as apparatus capable of being used to separate ethyl alcohol from a mixture that contains alcohol. Small stills (with a cubic distilling capacity of a gallon or less) that are used for laboratory purposes or for distilling water or other non-alcoholic materials are exempt from our rules. If you buy a small still and use it to distill water or extract essential oils by steam or water extraction methods, you are not subject to TTB requirements. If you produce essential oils by a solvent method and you get alcohol as a by-product of your process, we consider that distilling. Even though you are using and recovering purchased alcohol, you are separating the alcohol from a mixture -distilling.

Also, beware - having a still may not be illegal but, from other readings, if you buy one from somewhere the seller must report it to the FED and they can come knocking on the door anytime to see it.

Theres a woman on youtube that lives off the grid (and was raised that way) Anyway, she shows many vids; tapping trees for syrup, making cheese, how to treat your dried corn so that you domt get pelegra, and how to make a variety of stills! I dont know how to link it ,but shes "mscountrywitch". I almost didnt watch her at first, cuz of her channel name but she lives like this everyday. Makes her own solar electricity, etc. Interesting info.
