As far as receivers I have two that seem to be decent receivers. I think I like the Sony 7600, but they are a little more than $100.00. These are not hand crank but as mentioned most of the hand crank are of questionable quality. $20.00 of alkaline batteries would buy you a lot of listening time.
General class operator here (but not a very good/active one). It is amazing who you can talk to on occasion with a HF Transceiver. But long distance communication is reliant on proper atmospheric conditions so it is not consistent. You can't just turn on the radio and talk to the same person thousands of miles away, day after day. That is where hopefully nets comprised of individuals relaying messages to one another will come in handy. You can however get decent fairly reliable mid-range communication using a propagation technique called NVIS this will work in a region out a couple hundred miles or so. You can google for more info on that technique.
