Now add to this $3 - 4 a gallon gas, and you have the recipe for disaster. Those who are barely getting by, will no longer 'get by'.

Going to the grocery store has become a lesson in sticker shock. Every time I get to the check out, my jaw drops.

I wonder how long before we have food riots in the streets of major cities?

I wish I had started my garden sooner! Wife & I are buying all the store food we can now and have been for some time. The way we understand it, the more food you can buy now - the more money you will save later. The rate of increase of food costs is running off and leaving the interest rate paid on any savings account. It is a better return on investment to put your money into food than to try and save any money. The world is running backwards - don't be frugal and save your money like I was taught my whole life. Spend that money, but don't "blow it" either! Spend it on something you have to have, and you'll "save" money? Spending is good, saving is bad? Good is bad, bad is good! This old world just keeps getting curiouser and curiouser!

monkeybird: i know what you are talking about... Last week was my first week of my pharm.tech class, and I found out there are 3 prior military out of 15, and we are the only ones not getting the class for free (i count my GIBILL as earned, not given, thank you very much)...

During the first or second day of class one of the "welfare" teenagers actually was bragging that his mom with him(age 20) and two kids under 18 gets $1,500 in food stamps from Texas every month. I about choked!! Me, my wife, and my 2 y/o daughter live on a $600 month grocery budget, WTH people!! To put that in perspective, that welfare family gets $18,000 a year tax free income for being a lazy POS, and that is JUST for food. Surely they get Medicaid (welfare free healthcare), Section 8 (subsidized-to-free rent payments).

So lets look at the $18,000 a year in food. Below (hope the copy and paste works) is a chart of the poverty level in the USA.

So not counting the young adult still living at home, I am praying she doesn't get to still count him for more welfare money, she has 3 (mother + 2 kids under 18). So if the poverty level is BELOW $18,310 that means everybody who makes more than $18,310 gets either NO assistance or extremely reduced assistance. BUT this family makes $18,000 tax free and not required to annotate on her annual taxes JUST FOR FOOD!!

I have been telling family members, and a select few that might wake up, it was the HIGH GAS PRICES almost 3 years ago that started the snowball rolling before anybody even knew what a bailout was. High gas prices and high food prices literally takes food off the table. Unless you're on food stamps. So many people are having to decide whether to make a mortgage payment or eat?

Oh my gosh, at the preps I could do with $1500 a month!!! My dehydrator would be running 24/7!!

Shoot, I would be getting a nice raise to become unemployed and on food stamps with free Tenn Care. But that's not how we roll around this house. The LORD is my shepherd, not fed .gov or anybody else for that matter.

Hey bountyhunter! Your post reminded me of something I read a while back that I got a kick out of: "When you're mad as hell and can't take it anymore, grab your rifle and run outside! If you're the only one there, you're too early! Go back inside and wait!
