A few months ago I got myself an S10 respirator from a local army surplus place, when I got it home I decided to test it out and so put it on snugly and stuck my hand over the filter. To cut a long story short no matter how much I have tightened the straps ect a little air still seems to be able to enter under my chin on the right hand side. Is there anything I could be doing wrong or you do reckon the mask is just knackered?

wrong size!!
one of the tests I had to perform when NBC NCO, fitting masks, even if the mask seems to fit it may leak, a simple test is to cover the intake and inhale, see if it sucks tight tight tight to the face... if it passes this test, I would break open an inhalant capsule (smelled like bananas) and ask the wearer if he could smell anything out of the ordinary, and you guess it, if they say they smelled bananas, there was a leak somewhere...
so without seeing it first hand, i would have to guess wrong size mask apparatus...

Also 3sod I would look at the overall shape of it and make sure it's not holding the shelf shape being surplus it may need to be put near a heater to get it warm (not hot) and molded a little to conform better.Knowledge is Power, Practiced Knowledge is Strength, Tested Knowledge is Confidence

I conducted fit testing for hundreds of medical personnel. What a pain in the butt. Faces come in all shapes and sizes and properly fitting a respirator is no easy task. Facial hair is an issue, but as I fitted mostly females, i can tell you hair was only a small issue. If you're really serious about having a respirator that actually protects you, spend the money for a really good one.
