  • TEOTWAWKI Shopping List

Several of the threads on here have made me think about what could happen if an event occured and we had time to do things while the rest of the world watched their televisions. Think 9/11.

Several of you mentioned that you were able to go get fuel, batteries, etc... before everyone else made a rush on things. Kind of like before a hurricane.

IF those of us who watch the times and are prepping had time to hit the stores and still buy things before the mobs were able to - What would be some of the MOST important items?

Now, I know that situation dictates and it depends on what you have already stored/prepped for. But most of us are still short on a few things. Some are short on much more.

I would like suggestions on things that could be bought that would be VERY important to get before the mobs descend. And in what order of importance.

I have also been thinking of places that are not as mainstream like wally's world that would still have much of the same stuff. Dollar Stores, feed stores, home improvement stores, etc...

I know that it would raise eyebrows if I came to check out with 2-3 carts full of canned food, batteries (small and auto), medicine, etc... But it would be better to get in/out before everyone else does. Of course I am not advocating that we go spend all of our money on stuff if something extreme happens. But maybe stock up on some things that we hadn't because either our spouses disagreed or we just didn't do it for some other reason.

Some things I am thinking of:

Canned food, medicine, ammo, batteries, soap, cleaning supplies, TP, hand tools, alcohol (not a big drinker - but it has other uses). I have more that I have on my mind, but since I am at work (on break) I'm not thinking of all the stuff that I would want.

    Thoughts/Suggestions?

Plan ahead so you aren't in that mob at all!
TP for sure if you have the other things. Its hard to have enough. Speaking of that, If you lose water what do you plan to do with your excrement? That is something best planned for now! Search "humanure" to get ideas on composting your semi solid waste Urine can be mixed with water and used like liquid fertilizer.

Try putting them up as links instead of photos.

Medicines, especially scripts, perishables items such as milk, I know but it's TEOTWAWKI I can hear folks now. Ok so what, buy it if we lose power drink it or lose it and dont worry about it because your money aint no good either so you didnt lose anything right? On the canned stuff Jerry D, meat can be obtained in my case, maybe not what you wanna eat but I've never been anywhere in the entire world I couldnt find meat. I will and have eaten all kinds of birds even right out of the yard, reptiles, domestic stuff like the neighbors mean cat etc. I can't hunt rice, beans and carbs though IMHO. Top off the tanks and buy extra gas cans and fill if they have them even if you have stored fuel.
I would say in general any of the daily comfort items your wife would call and say bring home to include feminine hygiene stuff. And guys I like TP and will take a trip to get it. Spent a little time without it here and there, didnt like it none! LOL
Make sure though you do not go out unless the zombies are still sleeping like right after/during 9-11!!!!

Good points on gas and stocking up on extra cans/filling them up. Something I didn;t think of. I mean, worst case scenario - nothing happens and you use the gas.

Klayton, you need to go in business making 'waste disposal' available for everyone! Great pics.

a water supply and plenty of long term food and the means and know how to process and cook it, at least a couple yrs worth and have it well consealed. Many people on these sights talk about having ten thousand rounds of ammo and fifteen guns, but food and water in the most important things, if you can eat and live, everything will fall into place and if the supplies are well hidden from others, you can always go dig up enough for a few meals at a time, if you have to get into a gun fight to keep your supplies, you'll probably not need them anyway when the right or wrong people come thru.

I saw a great idea on the TP from another site. The author suggested that instead of stocking up on roll after roll of paper, you find a place that supplies diapers to mothers and get some of their old ones. Then you cut them and sew them, and make them reusable. It involves a bucket or diaper-keeper thing, but you use them, put them in the bucket, then wash them. It makes a lot more sense than trying to stock up enough TP to last for a while. Same method could be used for feminine hygiene products. Think reusable, instead of disposable.

my wife and i looked into cloth diapers when our first child was in the oven, after talking with some family members and doing some research we found it to be very labor intensive. From what we found you would need to stockpile up some borax to clean the diapers. We actually bought some cloth diapers as rags and they are soft.

*** I realize you wouldn't be wearing them but if you use them to wipe you will need to go thru the same process to remove the excrement. ***

Get a super soaker and have someone spray off your bottom when you get done, preferably with warm water. :) that is a joke.

                              Avoid the rush, prepare now.

One of the two most dangerous things early on is going to be this idea of "last minute shopping."

You'll be exposing yourself to potential contamination (will you know for 110% sure what trigger caused the panic? Might be a bug going around), social unrest, rioting and of course unwanted notice.

Just something as simple as a couple of thugs sitting watching people going out with 4 carts loaded to the gills and following them home could ruin your WHOLE PLAN. All for what? A couple extra cans of food you should be stocking now?

Sooner or later some degree of order will return. If that happens when food is still short, don't think that some law dog won't question Suzy the checkout gal at your grocery. She will remember that guy that came in and bought all that food the first day stuff started.

When you wait till something actually does happen and THEN rush out and stock up, you are in fact and definition- a hoarder.

When you put stuff up ahead of the game, in times of plenty, then it's preparedness.

I for one would not risk my family, all my plans, etc. for a couple extra cans of beanie weenies.

When I've spoken out against this in times past, invariably someone would say "but I can't afford to buy a bunch of stuff now." My reply was showing them how for $.70 a day they could put up a basic year supply of food. That thread is here also, on the Basics board.

It's not far behind the "I have guns, I'll take food" thing in my mind- your exposing yourself to greater risks that you wouldn't need to it you planned correctly.

Please think that over and plan accordingly. I post this not to knock anyone, but hopefully to save some lives.
