  • Feed Grain Hard Red Wheat - Again.

Picked up some feed wheat from the local feed dealer (hard red, he said) and ground it in my Kitchenaid Pro Coffee grider. Worked really well, but it sure doesn't smell like the flour I'm used to. Do I need to "clean" the wheat first? If so, how (or if there's an existing thread, can you point me to it).

    Thanks!

It's probably not the same variety of what your used to. A feedstore in general has no flipping idea what variety of wheat it is and they will most likely tell you what they think you want to hear.

"Cleaning" wheat refers to getting rid of the chaff and residual grain dust.

You could winnow it on a windy day or in front of an electric fan to further clean it if it required it. If not, just don't buy from there again and seek another source. It's going to vary from one bag to another in reality.

Could be also that that particular bag sat around BillyBob's Feedstore for a while.

My wife pointed out that there might be some residual coffee left in the grinder which accounts for the smell. She might be right. Live looked through the wheat, it looks pretty clean to me. Its really hard to find wheat around where I live (SW Ontario) so I might be stick with it.

SW Ontario Canada I'm assuming. Once place you could always try are the forever helpful Mormons. I don't agree with them spirtual matters, but I do agree with their philosophy on prepardness.

Here is a place to find them. For Ontario: 85 Queens Plate Drive
        Etobicoke, Ontario M9W 7K4 (416) 231-1805.

Give them a call and make a reservation to check out their cannery. Be sure to be very nice to them because they are good people.

Are you trying to compare the smell to store bought bleached and/or enriched flour? Comparing apples and oranges if that is the case...

There are lots of places I could get wheat if I went as far as Etobicoke, I'm a long way from there. I've thought of asking some local Mennonites about food storage but I really don't know any. Suppose I could just walk up to one in Walmart and start chatting.
