HANEs can damage or destroy satellites through two primary mechanisms. First, high levels of prompt radiation from gamma rays, X-rays, and neutrons can travel relatively unimpeded directly to satellites due to the low density of the atmosphere (Figure 2). This is limited to satellites within line of sight (LOS) of the HANE, with the Earth shielding many others.
