  • JRH and the Hurricane

Glad you didn't come out any worse than you did.
Best wishes for a return for normal life (even tho it's going to be a heck of lot of work)
Aren't you glad you were a prepared person. We are!
Prayers for your family for continued safety.

Seeing the devastation from Helene is sickening, and it could have been any of us. Sometimes being prepared means getting out of harm's way...

Got commercial power back a few days ago…. No high speed net, very limited cell connection.

Once I get back on a “real” computer I’ll post a big AAR.

Lots of lessons, lots of work. Lots of work well into the future. We are all ok, damage was primarily to infrastructure and outbuildings. Hundreds of trees down everywhere. We spent the first two-three days clearing 60 year old pines just to clear county road out. BIL fell in a window sitting on ground as we were lifting and cutting huge oak off his barn. Got some survival medicine practice in there- huge gash. We bandaged, he kept on working.

Old China Diesel 12KW genset took a major dump on me. Swapped solenoid, got it starting, then fuel pump started messing up. Going to try to fix that but also got a dual fuel backup ordered.
Solar well did ok, but not up to where it should have been. Wife hand pumped a lot of water and carried it to house, washed clothes in buckets, etc. Whole family stepped up.

Will post more when I have something decent to type on!

Sorry to hear that LD3, prayers that things get more 'normalish' soon. Glad you had that field medicine training and the med kit to help your BIL.

You know that we here on the forum have said many times that people need to spend money and get a great, not good, med kit, and training as we will need to use it often in emergencies. I believe that many people will die from infections in a grid down world, in fact news reported that in the Tampa area people are getting sick from walking in the water as it has sewage in it. They likely touch there face, maybe wiping off sweat, and then get sewage in their mucus membranes and get sick.

Guns and gear are cool, but bandages stop the bleeding!

ATTENTION: No trees or animals were harmed in any way in the sending of this message, but a large number of electrons were really ticked off!

        NO 10-289!

Some situations can't be prepared for, no matter how experienced and knowledgeable you are. Mother Nature will find a way around your best efforts.

I'm glad y'all are ok, but sorry you had to go through this. Your trusted genset failed when you needed it most, but hopefully it's back to normal soon (our very reliable genset took a dump on us a few months back, and we got a Generac installed with two 250# tanks. We were lucky with Milton and power only flickered a couple of times, but lost power for 9 hours during Helene and was glad to have power throughout).

I hope you'll be back to normal soon and be safe out there.

Posted an AAR that is mostly complete along with a couple pics. Will add more to it as I have time. Still cleaning up and will be for the foreseeable future.
