short story.. i guess you could call it a what if.
i'll pretend it was me.... makes it easier to write.
i went to tennessee for a large conference.
the conference arranged our stay at a hotel in the Fancy hotel group.
while checking in, the worker asked "do you want room maintenancee?"
the conference was in a large touristy area. most everyone in that town (tourists and residents) looked like they walked out of
sho nuf bible belt church. so i asked her to clarify that question.
looking back at it now, the girl was giving me a hint that i may not want this service.
i'm a tightwad and work to eliminate unnecessary expense. so i assumed this service was something they were going to add to my bill!!!
i checked and i was wrong. no added expense. so i replied, yes,, i would like the room maintenance.
we unloaded all our stuff and used one of the carts the hotel provided... on our floor we were surprised to see 3 fellers with maintenance carts.
you know, full of shampoo, towels, soap, toilet tissue. they were nearly blocking the corridor. i advised, "hey, i'm an old guy and not a good driver. need a little room!"
they looked at each other then one of them explained in english then in mumbled something in another language. the workers cleared a path.
my bride had concerns. i tried to be calm but i didn't want those guys digging in our suitcases. we unloaded our gear and i took the cart back .
all 3 of these guys were 6'1 to 6'3 and in good shape. not girly boys by appearance.
one of them made a comment i didn't understand, and all 3 smiled. i asked. interpreter from before what did he say? he let me know that he said i was a good driver.
i stopped, trying to be friendly and asked "where are you from?" they advised they lived there. i asked where is your home country? they looked at each other and lied.
we are americans. bs. they may be americans but they had not been americans for long.
on returning to the room we cancelled the room service/maintenance with the front desk and each day of our visit we put out the "do not disturb" cards on the door.
----- at the conference center i got to talking with some conference center workers... they looked like the normal tennessee resident! and i told the story.
there response was "there are a lot of J1's in this area." i had to ask what a J1 was... oops.. stopping to load.
