I keep all my old eyeglasses. I am constantly losing screws or nose pieces etc. With the rough and tumble stuff I do and spare parts are a beautiful thing. I keep a pair of old military ones in my GMHB and another in my BOB along with the small screwdriver sets. I know all us rambo types got a knife that will suffice but one slip and that trigger finger is now cut wide open and you are digging thru the BOB First Aid pouch trying to find the blood stopper and worrying about infection in a world gone bad.
I also have a pair of the gas mask inserts in a set of goggles on my battle rattle. Are they the right prescription, well no not anymore things change with age, however it's a whole lot better than being blind and in a fight. A headache from the wrong glasses is a whole lot better than a new hole in my forehead from the unseen ones. For those that wear contacts, get glasses as well. Smokey, chemical environments or even places where you may have to go underwater are not contact friendly. Yes I know they make contacts for swimming in beautiful clean blue water swimming pools but post SHTF, say in a Katrina environment, you get dunked one time in some good ole "floater" brown water them eyes are gonna burn and get scratched. It also applies to all you swamp rat, navy seal, ninjas who are going to sneak up on the zombies, breathing thru a reed, while on a stealthy underwater recon. Contacts are no good:) LOL
For those lucky ones who can get away with store bought reading glasses, pick up an extra pair of the cheapies and toss them in the BOB or glove box with a properly sized screwdriver in a hard or insulated case that is.
Sunglasses for everyone is not a bad idea, but certain conditions, such as snow country and deserts where daytime travel is needed it is almost a requirement. There are a lot of books that will teach you how to make sunglasses out of cloth or other material, in a survival situation, but we supposed to be thinking ahead, right?
