  • do you help an individual who shows up at your door hungry?

i've pondered this question before.... one of the cons is that they may come back the next day wanting a handout again.
just something a bunch of us have discussed... then this situation developed. supposed from national geographic.

A deer walked into a store in Colorado. The shop owner gave her some cookies. After leaving the store, she returned after half an hour with her entire familโ€‹y.

i started a new garden area last year. finally, the bean patch was about ready to pick. i could see where something was gently nibbling. ok with me.
the next day, i went back to start picking. every single bean was gone as was the top third of each plant...

My husband and I have discussed it many times. We've been open with our neighbors, friends, and family about the need to stockpile food, water, and household items. We also encouraged them to grow a garden, even a small one. I even offered to give them plants I already started. If they come knocking....I bought a case of ramen to share but they'd better stretch it. I make regular donations to the food pantry, and I'll be happy to give them the address. We have enough to last us through a moderately lengthy emergency, but I didn't buy enough for the whole neighborhood. People who weren't willing to help themselves when they had the opportunity will only be looking to help themselves to what we worked for. Cold? There is no warm and fuzzy when it comes to survival.

We have discussed this....if we say at our house, I said if....,we have some items...ramen, rice in baggies, cans of soup, etc., that we can hand out with instructions that is all. Now we know the actions of people are similar to the deer so there will immediately be a line....so what do we do? If we do not give hand outs will they come back with friends trying to take over as that is the nature of people who think you have something they need? Now our little neighborhood does have like minded individuals so we would set up barricades and such (we have discussed this). However, if it was that bad we would likely head to the BOL where we have several known friends and have trained together and have protocols for this. I believe both answers has pros and cons...But like I have told friends that have yet to start stocking...every meal I give you takes away from my family, so do not expect much if you come here...."but we are friends" is what I have heard, and I reply, "yes we are and as a friend I am telling you now that you should be stockpiling supplies because I will not give you more then a day or two of food. Unless you have a skill I desire, I cannot feed you and your family as that reduces our chance of survival." One even said "will you shoot me if I try and come in and get some?" I said, "lets hope neither one of us has to make that decision, but I will tell you, my family comes first."
