  • How close we were... and how close are we?

Good article on RT (yes, Russia Today, they lie about as much as the Amerikan media so why not?) about the Cuban missile crisis and how one Soviet submarine commander actually gave the order to fire but it was not quite followed.

If I had a guess, between the Syrian expedition and now Ukraine, we have probably experienced at least one other similar event. Maybe that would not have touched off nukes, but ground conflict with the Russians.

It's my contention as a cold war era survivalist that ANY direct conflict between Russian and American troops anywhere in the world should be viewed as a trigger point. You can argue that the Russians aren't doing well in Ukraine right now, conscripts, etc. etc. doesn't matter. We are ultimately not debating about whether Russian conscripts can beat Americans, but we should be looking at what TRIGGERS will take place afterwards.

Ditto with a nuclear blast just "happening" (most likely false flag) anywhere in that region, it won't be an accident. False flag probably. It won't be Russia "nuking Kiev because they can't win" or any stupid crap that Amerikan media tells you or your drunk Bubba uncle tells you. Putin's not a dunskie.

If that happens it will be most likely in the long line of "Remember the Maine!", "Remember Pearl Harbor!", "Remember 9/11" string of slightly odd incidents with a ton of unanswered questions around them that seem to get us involved in wars.

For the survivalist, none of that matters, what will matter if/when that happens is that you understand there will be a 90% probability of "no going back" from that point. You will want to immediately put plans in ACTION, your chances of survival depend on that. If you waste a day sitting around watching it on the news like most did on 9/11, you will likely miss your chance to take action and get moving.

I've told people for 36 years in doing this that we all need to have trigger points or trip lines and have them SET IN STONE. In other words things like "if a nuke goes off in anger or under odd circumstances anywhere in the world I put plans into action" or similarly- "if 3 large banks fail within X time period I put such and such into action."

Have trigger points tied to hard plans gives you a "go" point that you are psychologically setting ahead of time. This is important so you don't "waffle", debate, rationalize and then of course get "used to."

This could never be more important than it is now.

The other thing to consider here is that you always hear about "how close we were" YEARS LATER.

In other words, you cannot expect "official word" for you to take action. You will die waiting for it.

This "paralysis by analysis" thing with "preppers" IS REAL. I have watched people take MULTIPLE YEARS to make simple buying decisions, how much worse will it be when the "decision" is whether to BO and/or put your plans in action? People will sit around on their arses waiting for "more data" and doing their "research."

Oh and hey guys let's start using a different word please- "Research" is like finding a cure for cancer, not figuring out whether you want coyote or multicam in a magazine pouch.

Regardless of what happens (or not), we will be staying put because there's no walking out of here, or driving out of here in FL traffic. I won't be leaving my disabled husband behind while trying to save my own skin, so this is our last stand and we're about as ready as we're going to get. Given enough forewarning, I could pack up the motorhome and go somewhere else, but there really won't be anywhere to go and start over for us.

What have I put off? Firewood and a solar generator. I need to restack the "old" firewood to make room for new, and just call for a delivery. Husband has been opposed to buying a solar generator but sent me an advertisement for one today, so he's realizing he's no longer physically able to put a system together and we would be better off just buying a ready made expandable system.

I think I have said here I have an Inergy Flex system with two batteries and a super charger and four 100w panels. The system worked for me during the 20 hours or so we were without power during h-cane Ian. Is it the best out there today? I don't know as there are plenty of others worth looking at...Titan, Bluetti, to name a couple. Decide what you want to power, decide how much you can carry (weight of unit), cost of unit, and decide if you want it to be expandable and start looking. I would say pick a couple and wait for sales but in todays world not sure waiting on anything you have decided to be a critical item is prudent. Also when you decide call and find out wait time on shipping as that also may vary. Sure I had the larger system to power things, but I use the Flex 1500 to augment. The Flex 1500 is portable, so you can move it, again depending on how many batteries you have connected. As with many things you cannot go off of price. Look at your needs and "research" whats available today.

Today I'm going to restack the "old" firewood to make room for new, and clean up the area between the shed and the fence. It's a good day to do that and to seriously go back and take a second look at solar systems I'm interested in. Portability is a major concern and the solar generator & batteries will need to be on wheels or a cart of some type.since moving it will be on me. I've seen a couple that have a 30 amp outlet that would be perfect for the motorhome if we decide to go that route. Major concerns for the house are power to cycle the refrigerator and freezer, and sufficient cord length to have the generator under cover while the panels are outside to charge. Lots to consider.

Putting it on a cart is easy...I sometimes use a hand truck. Again, I am not promoting Inergy, but they have one like my Flex 1500 that is a 12v system. I am sure the other companies do as well as they are all very popular with the "Van Life" crowd...
