  • What I don't understand- help me with this

    https://www.infowars.com/posts/buckl...ore-inflation/

The economy is increasingly weak, and those in favor of the narrative that the US is in the midst of an economic boom have nothing to stand on but a low unemployment rate.”

Is there REALLY a "low unemployment rate" or is that BS? Seems like everyone is sitting on their arses "gettin a check!" of some sort. During our thankfully brief foray into running some rental houses for some family I was appalled at how blatant people were about getting free money. Didn't try to hide it, were pretty much proud of it.

One lady who was IMO easily 10-15 years away from a decent retirement age quit her job at Walmart citing that with her daughter's "check" and "checks" that got for her kids (I think they were a little special) they could afford to make it. Every time we would service that residence for stupid stuff (change a lightbulb for a tenant?) the place would be chock full of crappy groceries, had cartons of cigs stacked up like she was going to start the post apoc Marlboro Mafia, had a "new" car payment, etc. She was a legacy tenant that was a hold over from the old owners- who were old and got into that "everyone is good people" BS that old people tend to get into to try to deceive themselves either of the world around them or make themselves feel better about their own bad decisions/actions.

Others when they would come to look at possibly renting would brag openly about how many checks and benefits they got. They had no idea who TF they were talking to... I would smile and think to myself "Nope!!!" These ones would always tell me "I want it" expecting that to be it, done deal. I would say "well there is a waiting list, I'll call you if it gets down to you." One mid 30's pair look confused and the nose ringed fellow said "No, I said we WANT it." To which I said "No, you didn't hear me... there is a waiting list, you would be a couple dozen down on that list, I'll call you if it gets down to you." Confused look.

A good portion of the general population truly believes every person will sell their soul for a dollar and they don't really know WTF to do when they encounter someone who won't...

Rant over, back to the question-

How is unemployment supposedly "so low?" Are they not counting all these freeloaders that "get a check?" Or people that just stop looking? Or people that have been on "benefits" for years?

Unemployment numbers are based on the number of unemployed people who are actively seeking employment. Those people who quit their jobs, or never had one, and are living on whatever do NOT count toward the total unemployment numbers. A much more revealing statistic is the percentage of the total employable population that are actively employed or actively seeking work, known as the labor participation rate. As of April, it was down again in what Bloomberg called the disappearing workforce.

heard somewhere there are 11 million jobs available....problem is, the young people would rather stay home with mommy and daddy (or become a perpetual student), and some of us old people jumped ship and retired....early!

Kids with a college degree in gender studies don't qualify for too many jobs, so living in their parents' basement is their best option. Since they have a reprieve from student loan payments on an ongoing basis, why bother to work?

i'm on the front lines of this. I left my IT carreer over 4 years ago and work a low end service industry job. I deliver pizza something I did briefly back 2010, is my full time gig.

you guys don't understand, Covid lockdowns murdered the job market. So here is what happened:

Most restaurant workers lost their jobs. those of us in the delivery business did really well. well those workers who lost their jobs figured out how to survive without the income they were used too.

that whole $15 minimum living wage? remember that? haven't heard about it in awhile now...why? because most are making 13-16 hour now anyway but they don't need to work 40 hours. or even 30. here is a typical scenario:

          2/2 apartment rental $1200 electric $175 cble and internet $150 = $1525

now divide that by 4 people. thats only $381 a month. round to an even $400.

thats how one of my regulars lives. 2 couple to ta 2/2 apartment.

so you have service industry peeps only needing $400 a month for base living expenses.

now throw in a paid for beater car bought with stim money. basic insurance $100 a month.

if you're pulling in $13 an hour 111 hours a month will net you after taxes 1200 a month take home. you have $700 a month left over for gas and food. its 28 hours a week working.

we just had some a-bag pull a no call no show last week because he got scheduled to close 3 nights and a rush shift the 4th night. he didn't wanna close and only wanted 25 hours a week. this was his only gig it wasn't a second job.

the service industry workers all sat around playing video games during the rona and found they'd rather do that and work as little as possible. its what the driver who quit and whole bunch more are doing. this is why unemployment rate is so low and everyone is hiring, because no one wants to work more than 30 hours!

its partyl why things are starting to grind to a halt. the young service workers have basically gone Galt.

so you'd think this would open up a world of opportunity for teenagers right? well it has....except they don't want to work at ALL. most don't have drivers licenses with no plans to get one. and if you do employee one, holy hell they suck as employees.

where I work we have 2 teens that kick butt. they are fresh out of high school last year, they are an interracial couple, he's white shes Hatian and they work like they are in the Great Depression. all the rest that come through are lazy attitude problems with zero work ethic.

              That's an interesting take.

I remember coming up and hearing all the hoopla about how all these "evil businesses" (you know everyone that has money or a business has either A. Stole it. B. Inherited it C. Don't some illegal stuff to get ahead, thus is the socialist mindset) were "cutting" hours from 40 down to under 30 so as to "keep from paying benefits" and/or some workman's comp, etc.

Only had regular employees a couple years and they were technically independent contractors but I remember early 90's that talk was all the rage.

Part time employees or those working 10 hours here and 10 hours there are not consider "unemployed" for purposes of federal accounting for unemployed numbers correct?

From everything I read (4 or 5 articles), anyone who worked for pay is considered employed for the week in which they worked.

I know from a patient that sells apartments (she is the lease agent but she sells the people to rent from her) that where she is, downtown Orlando a studio goes for $2k and a one bedroom is pushing $2500+ depending on location in the building. Now, these are higher end apartments, but she says a normal run of the mill one bedroom in O-town is running $2K+

replying to your 1st statement in bold: thats still less than $600 a month each. they can still absorb that cost and keep playing video games.

i've been working 50+ hours a week for the entire month of may. we managed to get ONE new hire on board this week. hopefully a couple more next week. i don't have my new schedule yet but I'm assuming I'm clopening for the 3rd time in a week today/tomorrow. clopening is what we call working the closing shift, getting off work at about 1am and being back at 10 am to open.

replying to the 2nd bold statement: the middle class is a bunch of clueless stains and honestly they have caused the problems we see in the restaurant business. they use to just tell their kids to not work a "mcjob" now they don't bother telling them to work or make them work at all. I have, no shit not making this up at all, taught 2 grown ass men in the last 2 years how to sweep a floor. one of them was 31 married and with kid #2 on the way. the other was 22 years old. neither of them knew how to use a broom.

My stepson and family have 4 people (2 adults, 2 kids) working full-time in the service industry, and were paying $3K for a 4/3. Rent was raised to $4K so they're looking for a new place. Southern FL isn't the place to be apartment hunting, with all the rents rising astronomically. All 4 of them are hard-working and dependable, but $4K is stretching it. Moving in with us is out of the question - we have one guest room and there are 5 of them total.

Here in NC, we are seeing homes sold in less than 2 hours after going on market. Large Hedge Funds are snapping entire new developments with plans to rent them out...not sell them. As interest rates climb people (middle class) wont be able to establish financing without a HOOOGE down payment. 2 years ago my home appraised for 269k. Today it is 530k and while it is enticing to sell and "make money" I would have no place to live because the houses are gone way too fast and constructing a new home would be near impossible with the supply chain issues and crazy lumber prices. Perking a home is a 3 month wait in my area. The only thing that hasnt gotten too stupid is purchasing undeveloped land, but even that is getting a little harder. My plan now is to buy some land ... farther out than I already am...build something like a yurt farm for family (or tiny homes) shipping container, etc. and move out there and then join the masses in putting my house up for sale or rent.

Even here, my house is worth over twice what I paid for it, but we have no intention of selling unless the whole area undergoes a massive negative change. It's quiet, no restrictions so we can pretty much change what we like within reason, and I would need an army to move us out of here! I still check out land or modest homes with land in other areas outside FL, but it's hard to move to a state where it's not as free as here. We'd like some land, but prices are ridiculously high, and my love of the mountains isn't shared by my husband. There's barely a day that goes by that some hedge fund realtor isn't calling or mailing to see if we will sell.

Housing developments are going up everywhere within 10 miles of us, and new commercial buildings are expanding a couple of miles from here. What used to be quiet country farmettes are now on main thoroughfares. Rentals are uncommon in our neighborhood and I hope it stays that way.
