We've covered some of this stuff years ago on here, in other words, we are not the johnny come lately's just now realizing nuclear war is a threat to prepare for :)
But it's probably a good time to go over the 1st thing you should do in regards to nuclear preps, and something that a lot of folks don't do.
It's not "buying KI". It's not "buying" anything.
It's sitting down with a map of your state and the state to the West of yours and figuring out all possible nuclear targets.
1. Know all potential targets. All military bases, all major population centers, all major airports and seaports. Mark them on your map or note them.
2. Figure a rough direction and distance to each, most especially the nearest ones.
Put all this in a notebook, making it easy to read in case it's your wife, kid, etc. that has to decipher it cause you aren't there, or are out of it, etc.
So how does this help?
Let's say for example I see a flash in the sky to the South east a good distance away. That's likely Kings Bay submarine base going up. Definitely a first strike target. Not an immediate threat to me based on our location but a good sign that more is to come that may be closer to me. I make a note of the rough time and chart that in my nuke notebook.
Not long after around the same distance away there is a similar flash to the North West. OK, that's likely Warner Robins AFB, also likely a first strike target. Depending on weather patterns that could be an issue for us. Note the rough time and target in the nuke notebook. I know it's roughly 120 miles from my location so I got a little time on that even if the wind is working against me and is somehow blowing against normal patterns.
Right after this I see another flash to the South West, around the same distance. OK, that's Moody AFB near Valdosta. That's one a problem for me. Note time and that Moody is the target. While fallout isn't 100% related to the wind speed, knowing the wind speed does give me a ROUGH idea when to expect fallout from Moody. Let's say it's 10MPH. Alright I got a few hours before we "have" to shelter.
Now that time isn't time to be wasted making some BS prepper fantasy "last minute shopping run" to get stuff you should have been storing all along. It's time to get any last stuff in a shelter or basement, secure gates, block entrances, cover gardens and wood sheds with tarps, etc. Have a pool? Cover it also. What about livestock?
You could possibly use that time to add some shielding to a basement or home built shelter. This could be stacking your buckets of grains in a manner which will help offer a little bit of shielding. Ideal? Hell no. But most of us don't have an actual honest to goodness "fallout shelter" so that means we have to improvise.
