  • Any Deer Hunters Out There?

I spent last week at my BOL and did a little deer hunting. My wife was with me and I got a doe on the third day of gun season.:)

We brought the backstraps in and my better half ground up some with our hand powered grinder and she made what she calls "sloppy doe".:D MAN it was GOOD!

The best part ......... on my land = no deer tag or hunting license needed.

Thanks Matt, how'd I miss that post?

Nice looking buck! And I envy you being able to hunt with rifles, shotgun or muzzleloader only here.

https://www.survivalandpreparednessf...g-Youth-Season here is my daughter with her first buck!
We can use all them tools of the trade down here and I try when time and money prevails even been know to take one with a pistol now and then. Family surgeries kept me from smokepolling one this year but my vacation is already in for next and bow season is in the same time frame too! Did you get any pics of yours? I always take pics because they are all trophies, work just as hard for my little doe as I do for my biggest buck. We put up 6 in 3 days of hunting and this week I'm making summer sausage.

WOW!! Thats a great pic of a great deer, she looks proud as do you. My wife took a pic while I was gutting mine but I don't think I should put it up here. I took another to send to my friends but its a crappy cell phone pic. We always process our own deer but I have a bunch of family medical issues this year so I took it to my Amish friend and he processed it to summer suasage, after we took the tenderloins and roasts of course.

In a harsh situation you can take a deer/rabbit/squirrel most any time. Hunting seasons will have to be ignored if you are to survive. Canning, drying, and curing meats may not last through long lean times. People kill hogs, beef, goats, etc. all during the year so why not plan on taking deer the same way. Got my first about thirty years ago. Took me three years to learn even the basics of proper hunting. Made many mistakes. For the last 20+ years I have taken 3-6 for the families protein intake. We normally freeze but have started canning and drying also. If we have no electricity we will have to rely on those techniques that our ancestors used. We have bi-annual gatherings and last Oct. we processed a goat from walking to cooking/putting up other ways. It was a learning experience for many and eye opening to most. One year we did a snapping turtle. One can survive if (big IF) they know how. Best way to know how is to practice at leisure. Then when shtf your experiences will fall right into place.

Whilst looking for state regs (Missouri) on when you can use a crossbow, I stumbled across the Mo Dept of Conservation website which listed several things of interest. Apparently, in MO, it's illegal to hunt deer with "any device that projects a light onto the target." I know that was designed to prevent spotlighting them, but it also makes laser sights illegal. Also, it's illegal to use a non-expanding bullet, such as FMJ to hunt with, no matter what caliber. Further, it's illegal to hunt with any repeating rifle that has a magazine capacity greater than 11 rounds, including one in the chamber. i.e. that CETME is illegal to hunt with, as the only mags they make for it are 20 round. Your average AR-15 would be illegal too, unless you found a small magazine for it. You are also prohibited from using buckshot, although slugs are legal, down to and including .410. Crossbows are legal during firearms season, but I didn't see about archery season. I need to go back and look again.

I have modified several magazines with a piece of steel cut the width of the mag in a "U" shape which limts the 20rd AR mags to 7 rds, legal here in Oklahoma. The Ranger will check them and will be satisfied seeing how they are done. It requires complete breakdown of the mag to convert back and remove the piece. Not an issue SHTF to fix back to 20 but not easily done if deer huting so it satisfies the need.
