Great thread. I have been giving some serious thought to all my preparedness subjects, and water is at the top of the list. I'm making notes of a number of local sources, and methods of transport. If need be, I'll make some late night pick-ups, and bring them back to my home and treat and store them in clean containers for drinking then.

At this point in time, I have a handful of creeks, a major river, and an old cistern at an old abandoned farm. I was out doing some hiking on the old farm property one day, and happened across it quite by accident. Once I removed the lid, I was surprised to see that the water was really clear, and I was able to see to around 4-5' before diffraction took over.

All of these sources are within walking distance of my home, and all of them have a couple of ways to and from them, to here, that are pretty stealthy. By the way, a real good way to transport a couple of cans of water for any long distance, is to get one of those two-wheeled carts that hunters use to transport their large game kills through the woodlands to their vehicles, or their hunting camps.

You could build a "rainwater collection" system at your house out of a number of 55 gallon barrels. In times of "stress" you could fill the system with tap water just in case. If you had a garden it would be for irrigation. In an emergency situation you will have a considerable water supply.

I found some 275 gallon bulk liquid containers. Going to install them under my deck for garden use, but like Monel said in times of trouble it would be nice to have over 500 gallons of water nearby.
Stand next to me and you'll never stand alone.

Sounds pretty useful but I have no real concept of how that looks like.
Could you provide a link to a picture?

Monel's link for the garden cart would work, but this is what I had in mind.

Lots cheaper, and smaller size makes it easier to navigate through areas with heavy brush cover like what you would find in many parts of the country.
I know that the carry capacity is smaller than the garden cart, but that is part of the stealth that I considered with this.
