i went to sams with the bride for some groceries yesterday.. family coming in for the weekend.
    -- i was shocked.
we had 1 buggy. total price 480.. buggy was not full.
meats - only 4# of .88 ground beef. 2 rotisserie chichkens at 5$ each.. 1 pack of sandwich meat

biggest purchase was 5 large coffee containers at 15$ on sale from 22$ each.

non food items were 1 tool pack of metal items from gerber and one from leatherm__ totalling about $60 the rest was edibles.
    -------------
when we got to check out lanes. our lane and the one next to us .... cashiers were politely telling folks their cards wouldn't cover the total and they were taking stuff out of their buggies.
cashier was saying "ok that was 28$ that helps now what else can you put back? " it took a long time as customers were putting stuff back 1 item at a time trying to get under the limit on their gov't cards.
    i want a gov't "free stuff" card.
we finally saw an open lane and moved.

the Dollar General store nearby has a sign out "hiring now." i think i'm going to apply.

I only buy groceries for one person, and still manage to spend at least $150/week. Lots of this is toilet paper and paper towels (for the nurses), and other non-food items. I rarely buy meat, trying to take advantage of all the meat I canned for the past 2 years. It's still ridiculous! I just canned 14 pints of turkey soup (Thanksgiving leftovers plus garden veggies from last year) and I'll use some of it to avoid having to cook👍

I can't imagine having to take items out of my order to avoid an overdraft - it would be embarrassing and humiliating. I pray I never have to deal with government benefits for food.
