  • late credit card payments and usps

our mail delivery has been horrible for the last 6 months.

we put a check in the mail april 11 or 12 to pay off a credit card bill. check credited on may 7.
it was a "store" credit card.
this made it past due generating a 27 fee and 2.+ interest charge.
in the meantime, we got a notice that this card was going to 34.99 interest rate.. 35%
we called this morning.. and talked nice and got the 27.00 fee removed. i asked if they kept the envelope or if they scanned it ? no was the answer.

wife is cutting up the card. we've had it for 5+years.. always paid it in full.

maybe we got the notice because we were late pays. but it looked like a general notice to all holders of that card.
taking the check to finish off paying the 2.00 interest payment to the nearby big town... maybe part of the problem is our local village post office.. ??

things are getting crazier all the time.

I pay all my bills online. While this may be riskier than using postal mail, it's not going to get lost in the shuffle, and I never have late fees. Basically, we have utilities, car and home insurance, and auto registration renewals. I always use a credit card when shopping online since an fraudulent charges will be handled by Visa and Mastercard.

We've only had one problem like that and it was with ATT back in 2020. Didn't receive one month's bill then got the nasty next bill and call. Put that on auto draft after that.

My utility bills are on auto-pay since our electric service almost got disconnected while I was in the hospital a few years ago😂

I don't know about that specific store, but I remember back in the day, Lowes would accept cash payments towards card balances in store. You went to the service desk and told them you wanted to pay on your Lowes card. When we were working on getting out of debt back in 07-08 I would take every extra $50. cash I could make on the side over there and pay a little more on it that way, along with mailing a check every month. Benefit of that also was the in store payment is credited immediately- that could be looked at as your "monthly payment" so if you later also mailed a check and somehow the PO delayed the mail, you would have still had a payment in on time.
