no more checks in aussie land... rumor?

an associate has informed us that banks in austrailua (sp?) don't issue
nor accept checks any longer.
i've asked for more detailed info. but haven't rec'd a response yet. ??
maybe be an indicator of what is planned for the u.s.a. ?
