I have pulled out my grandparents stamp collection. This may have gone back even further than just them though as many stamps are early 20th century. Anyway, I am wanting to find out possible values and know there are soooooo many things that need to be taken into consideration. Just like coins, stamps can be worth 1000's of dollars or the same looking one can be $4.99 + $5.00 shipping. There are three volumes of stamps, two that covers US stamps and one that is world stamps.
So, a couple questions:
1. Do you take them to a stamp collector and trust they give you the correct value (and do not siphon off the few that have any real value)?
2. How do you find a trustworthy collector or a guy/gal that can value your stamps?
3. Is/are there a website(s) that can give values estimates?
4. What is the best way for me to sell these volumes of stamps?
We have identified one stamp, that looks the same, has the same features, seems to be in better condition then one sold on eBay for over 5 figures....however, I know that just one little tiny feature could make the one more valuable than mine, so I am not getting my hopes up. With the three volumes and the ones that have not made it into books we have probably close to 1000+ stamps....and most of the ones in the books are in plastic protectors. Oh, and I have post cards with stamps, some of which the stamps are embossed in the postcard, that are dated in the 1800's (my grandfather was born in 1899). These postcards are written in possibly German....
Any help would be appreciated...
